São Tomé and Príncipe, an island nation off of the west coast of Africa, is a tiny Portuguese-speaking country in the Gulf of Guinea. Home to large number of native birds and plant life, it is one of Africa's most important nesting sites for a diverse range of sea turtles. São Tomé and Príncipe is also a quiet location, receiving about 20 tourists per week. Students in this program were able to engage with local artists and artisans while exploring sleepy fishing villages, biodiverse jungles, and the old colonial plantations of São Tomé Town. In addition to working outdoors on-site in varying locales as they developed a body of work, students attended lectures, field trips, and musical performances, and saw a play that has been staged in São Tomé and Príncipe since the 16th century.
